What is skin exactly?
The skin is a large organ that covers our body entirely. While it protects us from the outside world, it also puts us in contact with that world, especially by touch. Our skin has an average surface area of 1.7 sq.m., and weighs 3 kg.
The skin is made up of 2 main layers:
- The DERMIS is the deep layer of the skin. Its average thickness is 1 to 2 mm. It provides nutrition for the epidermis and is at the source of our perceptions as it contains the nervous system. Its cells produce collagen and elastin fibres, which provide resistance, firmness, suppleness and elasticity for all of skin.
- The EPIDERMIS is the layer at the surface that is constantly being renewed. It reflects the condition of our skin. Its average thickness is 0.2 mm. Its main role is to build the stratum corneum made up of about thirty layers of stacked dead cells. It's our essential barrier against external factors.
Does it really make a difference if I don't remove my makeup?
Yes! Of course, it's not the end of the world if you go to bed one evening without taking your makeup off. But otherwise, makeup removal is as beneficial to your skin as brushing is to your teeth! Actually, to be precise, we should talk about "makeup removal and cleansing". Indeed, in the evening, makeup removal frees your skin not only of makeup but also of pollution, dust and impurities that have built up during the day. It is similar to removing a skincare mask to reveal skin's purity again. It dissolves stress and eliminates fatigue.
What would happen if you didn't remove your makeup on a regular basis? Your skin would slowly become "dirty". Your complexion would end up becoming dull and spots could begin to form. Moreover, you can prevent a dull complexion by simply making twice-a-day cleansing a regular habit.
I like to use water. What cleansing ritual does Lancôme recommend for me?
You prefer foams. First, work your cleanser with water into a foam on the palm of your hand before applying it to moistened face. You'll find that it's easier to rinse off.
- MOUSSE ECLAT and GEL ECLAT are rinse-off cleansers that gently and thoroughly removes makeup for wonderfully radiant skin. For normal skin.
- MOUSSE CONFORT is a foam cleanser that cleanses even the most delicate skin with a comforting caress. For dry skin.
I like using a cleansing milk. What cleansing ritual does Lancôme recommend for me?
You can apply the milk cleanser onto face with a cotton ball. However, you should also experience the pleasure of applying it with your hands: it is both softer and more effective. Release two pumps of milk onto your hands. Warm it up to the right temperature by rubbing your hands together. Apply to your face and massage to remove all impurities thoroughly. Wipe with a cotton ball soaked in toner.
- GALATÉIS DOUCEUR: this rich milk delicately removes makeup on the face and eyes. For normal skin.
- GALATÉIS CONFORT: this milk gently removes makeup from even the most delicate skin. For dry skin.
Should you use a specific makeup remover for your eyes?
Yes. Always use an "Eye makeup remover" product. Milks, gels and other cleansers for the face are not gentle enough or adapted for use on the eye area.
Is toner really necessary?
Yes. Because today's toners don't just remove the last traces of makeup remover. They also function as treatment products. Plus, they condition and prep skin for other skincare treatments.
- TONIQUE ÉCLAT: Gentle toner for normal to combination skin.
- TONIQUE DOUCEUR: Alcohol-free toner for normal to dry skin.
- TONIQUE CONFORT: Gentle toner for dry skin.
If I don't put on any makeup in the morning, should I still use a makeup remover at night?
Yes. Simply because your makeup remover isn't just for removing makeup. It also cleanses and purifies your skin.
Why do you have to use a cleanser in the morning?
In the morning, you need to cleanse your skin, because even if you removed your makeup thoroughly the night before, sebum secretion and dirt can build up on your skin overnight.
Should you rinse cleansing milk off?
Yes. To get rid of all the impurities thouroughly, you should ideally further cleanser and treat with a toner.
Do all skin types need to be moisturised?
Yes. It's good to remember that our body is made of 70% water. It's a vital element. Our skin is naturally moisturised. In ideal conditions, this natural hydration would be enough. But we must also deal with external factors such as wind, car fumes, smog, UV rays, weather and air conditioning. In short, we must deal with life, and inevitably, our precious water supplies deteriorate.
The skin needs water. Otherwise, it feels tight and looks dull and tired. And that's why you should quench your skin with the right amount of hydration, every day!
Moisturising your skin benefits it in many ways:
- enhances its smoothness: well-hydrated skin glows with health
- preserves its youthful appearance: well-hydrated skin is stronger and more resistant. It fares better over the passing years.
What is the right Lancôme moisturising programme for me?
When you are thirsty, you don't always drink the same thing as your best friend. So, as far as moisturising is concerned, rather than having a set menu imposed on you, order "à la carte". You should also make your choice according to your preferences and your skin's needs.
Normal or combination skin?
Sometimes, after a stressful day or a rough night, my face looks drawn and my skin feels tight. It becomes too sensitive for any product. Why?
Beyond external factors such as variations in temperature, pollution or dehydration, psychological factors (lack of sleep, anxiety, fatigue, stress) can also influence the well-being of the skin. This may translate visibly into tightness, discomfort and sometimes redness. These reactions are due to the skin's over-excitable nerve endings, and calls for soothing comfort.
If I wear a moisturising foundation, should I apply a moisturising cream beforehand?
Yes. It's not that serious if you forget from time to time, as foundations are becoming more and more beneficial. However, a cream meets specific skincare needs. In fact, by applying a daily cream and a moisturising foundation, you maximise their effectiveness. Leave your cream on for a few minutes before applying your foundation to ensure that it has been absorbed.
Am I moisturising my skin when I spray on mineral water?
No. You refresh it instantly on the surface, which can be enjoyable when you are feeling hot. But generally speaking, only a moisturising treatment has the power to truly moisturise the skin for several hours.
Can makeup remover be harmful to your eyes?
You must of course choose a right makeup remover. For waterproof makeup, there's Bi-Facil, a bi-phase solution. For tired eyes, opt for Effacil, a very fresh lotion.
Is it best to choose an eye contour treatment based on the skincare I use for my face?
In theory, yes. Because if your facial skincare is in keeping with your needs and your tastes, then in all likelihood, an eye contour treatment that is formulated along the same lines is probably best suited to you and will complement the other products from the same range.
Do my eyes need a special treatment?
Yes. Look at yourself straight in the eyes. What do you see? Ultra-delicate skin which looks like fine paper? So it's about time you learnt how to take care of it! The skin around the eyes is 5 to 10 times thinner than the skin on the rest of the face. It is also less irrigated because blood and lymph vessels are thinner and fewer. And on top of that, we use our the muscles around our eyes constantly, whether rubbing them, laughing or crying.
So not only is the skin here more delicate, but we spend our lives making it even more so. As a result it is the first area to show signs of ageing. These appear not only as wrinkles and fine lines but also as puffiness and dark shadows so we have to treat them properly. So given these problems, we need to treat the eye area with special care.
Can I use my face treatment, which works very well for me, around the eyes?
No. Facial creams sometimes contain stronger active ingredients that can irritate eyes. Only specifically designed eye contour treatments are recommended for this area.
If I am using two products, one for the face and the other for the eyes, which one should I apply first?
It doesn't really matter as the products are not layered one on top of the other. That said, it is usually more practical to start with your eye care product.
What causes dark circles under the eyes?
Three factors are responsible for dark circles:
1. Microcirculation around the eyes is naturally lazy and slow. The blood containing micro-waste "stagnates" in the capillaries, resulting in a blue-black colour under the eyes.
2. The skin is much finer around the eyes than on the face and the transparency of the skin makes microcirculation more visible and causes blue-black shadows.
3. Some people have black-brown circles under the eyes caused by an excessive production of melanin in this area.
I have oily skin and sometimes I get spots. What can I do?
To help you to control your oily skin and imperfections, you should use oily-skin-specific products.
By applying a day cream every day, isn't there a risk that my oily skin will be even shinier?
No. Now there are moisturising fluids that also effectively remove and control shine. They are lightweight, fresh and don't leave behind a sticky afterfeel.
Do all skin types begin the ageing process at the same time and do they continue at the same pace?
We asked our Lancôme scientists.
The answer is no, simply because the ageing process is the result of two different factors. On one hand, there's the natural ageing process. This is written in our genes and are unavoidable. Around age 30, some women just seem more fortunate than others. This is why we can look at our mothers to get an idea of what we will look like later in life. Then on the other hand, there is the self-inflicted ageing process.
This is great news because today's cosmetics give us the means to thwart it. The effects of this process are due to our lifestyle and environment. As a result, we can protect our skin conscientiously with skin treatments and by not exposing it to too much sun, so that it stays young for a long time. Reassuring, isn't it?
Did you know? The skin behind your ears, which is protected from the sun and pollution, looks 10 years younger than the skin on the rest of your face. What better reason to use a highly protective cream every morning?
